The first day of school in the Village will be on August 22, 2018. With students returning to class, here are some important safety tips and reminders:

  • Educate children on safe bus riding and walking behaviors when getting on and off the bus.  Teach young children to take five giant steps (10 feet) in front of the bus and to wait for the driver’s signal before crossing.

  • Develop appropriate bus pick-up/drop-off policies.

  • Closely supervise children under age 10 who must cross the street after exiting the bus.

Parents who drive their children to school are asked to please obey traffic laws in the neighborhoods with schools. Drivers should allow extra time to get to work in the morning due to slower speed limits in school zones and school buses out on the roads making stops.

A ticket for speeding in a school zone is a serious traffic offense because it can result in the Secretary of State suspending your driver’s license.

The law provides that the speed limit in a school zone is 20 miles per hour on school days when children are present. A school day begins at 7:00 a.m. and lasts until 4:00 p.m.

The critical issue with speeding in a school zone is that the offense does not allow court supervision. Any ticket for speeding in a school zone that results in a conviction, cannot be expunged from your driver’s record and results in points on your license.

Drivers need to be aware of stopped school buses. The law requires a driver to stop before meeting or overtaking a school bus stopped for the purpose of loading or unloading students. The stop is required if the school bus is displaying visual signals. A driver should not proceed until the visuals signals cease. A limited exception to this rule applies on a 4 or more-lane highway that have a least 2 lanes of traffic in opposite directions. On these roads, if a driver is traveling in the same direction as the school bus, the driver still must stop. A driver need not stop if the driver is traveling in the opposite direction of the school bus. The Illinois Secretary of State will suspend the driver’s license of anyone convicted of the violating this law for a period of three months.

This is an exciting time of year for our youngest community members as they return to a school year full of promise and opportunity!  Your Police Department will be sharing in this excitement. Officers will be at both elementary schools greeting students and families as they arrive for their first day.
